Descriptions of Fossil Locations – Geology Tour in Morocco
1. Sidi Rahal (Quartz and Agates)
Located near Marrakech, Sidi Rahal is famous for its colorful chalcedony, amethyst, quartz crystals, and agates. This area is popular with mineral collectors and a great introduction to Morocco’s rich geological diversity.
2. Beni Zoli (Ordovician Trilobites)
Situated near the Draa Valley, Beni Zoli is an Ordovician site known for its large, well-preserved trilobite specimens, particularly Asaphus species. The fossils are often found embedded in hard limestone.
3. Serradrar (Silurian Orthoceras)
This is one of Morocco’s best sites for black Silurian orthoceras, an extinct marine cephalopod. Fossils here are usually straight-shelled and beautifully preserved, often used in fossil marble.
4. Jbel Tiskaouine (Calymene Trilobites)
This Ordovician mountain site is rich in Calymene and Flexicalymene trilobites. It offers one of the best chances to observe multiple trilobite types in their natural matrix.
5. Isoumour (Devonian Trilobite Site)
Known as “Trilobite Paradise,” Isoumour hosts Devonian-aged trilobites including Phacops, Coronocephalus, and others. The fossils are often rolled and very well-preserved, found in shale and limestone layers.
6. Lakrabis (Red Ammonites)
This site is special for its red ammonites, a rare fossilized marine mollusk. The coloration and detail make them a favorite among collectors and fossil dealers.
7. Lalla Mimouna (Devonian Trilobites)
Located near Mecessi, this area yields Devonian trilobites, particularly Phacops rana. It’s an open field site ideal for guided fossil hunting and offers a hands-on experience.
8. Jbel Mdawar (Devonian Goniatites)
This ancient reef structure is rich in spiral-shaped goniatites, an early ammonoid. These fossils are embedded in dark limestone and are prized for their pyritized appearance.
9. Kem Kem Beds (Dinosaur & Fish Fossils – Taouz)
One of the most famous fossil beds in North Africa, Kem Kem is rich in Cretaceous-era fossils, including spinosaurus teeth, crocodile bones, fossil fish, and turtle remains. A must-visit for dinosaur enthusiasts.
10. Boutariyt (Echinoderms & Crinoids)
This site is full of ancient sea creatures such as echinoderms and crinoids. Many specimens here are beautifully preserved and can be found in limestone outcrops.
11. Filon 12 Mine (Vanadinite & Quartz Crystals)
An abandoned mine near Taouz, Filon 12 is well-known for vanadinite crystals, goethite, and quartz inclusions. It’s a great spot for mineral collectors and photographers alike.
12. Azourz (Pyritized Goniatites)
This site contains black Devonian goniatites preserved with pyrite, giving them a metallic golden sheen. These are often highly valued and striking in appearance.
13. Tisket (Devonian Trilobites)
A productive area for rolled trilobites, especially Phacops. The fossils here are often compact and suitable for hand collection. It’s a good location for casual diggers.
14. Sacred Oasis (Gypsum & Sand Roses)
Just north of Merzouga, this oasis area is a top spot to collect desert rose formations made of gypsum and sand, formed naturally by wind and water erosion.
